SEO is constantly changing and you need to stay ahead of the changes if you want to progress with your website rankings. The question many ask now is what should they do because they don’t want to be viewed as black hat, or going against what Google wants.
The answer is simple… do whatever your appetite for risk allows!
Before we get into details of the different strategies such as grey hat, white and black hat, if you’re interested in reading my latest product review you can check out my review of Get Auto Commissions at my thread Warrior Forum – Get Auto Commissons where you’ll see my honest and legitimate review. Now back to SEO…
Black hat seo is effective if you know what you are doing however it’s also very risky. That is why I personally would never recommend using black hat methods on your main website. I think it’s personally too risky and you are likely to get hit. On the other hand if you have minor websites, or even websites you don’t own, such as free blogs then by all means utilize black hat methods if they get you quick results.
White hat is what many business owners want. They want 100% legitimate seo that will get them results and not get penalized. Unfortunately what 99% of people think is white hat actually falls into the grey hat category. Any manipulation of the search engine rankings is not white hat. White hat seo comes from networking and PR. For example: if you write a high quality article on SEO and people from authoritive websites like your article and decide to reference it giving you a link from their site, this is white hat!
Creating 100 high quality articles and posting them on directories and blogs is not white hat. You are directly attempting to manipulate the search engine rankings and therefore this is grey hat. Even if your articles are of amazing quality and very informative it is still classed as grey hat.
So is grey hat bad?
No! Grey hat is not bad and in fact it could be the holy grail of internet marketing / search engine optimization if done correctly!
While seo’s from big authoritive websites tell you that white hat is the only way other smart seo’s are getting serious results through grey hat methods.
The best link building method for grey hats is gaining links from relevant, high pr websites. So for example: you own a blog about weddings. You need links that come from trusted websites (in the eyes of Google) that are relevant to your website topic. In this case it’s weddings! If you have combine trusted high quality (high pr) with relevancy you have a very good back link.
These are the types of links I personally specialize in and they are getting me amazing results as well as great results for my clients. I have been able to rank my personal seo client blog for many keywords such as seoLondon and even national and international keywords.
The ultimate seo strategy?
The ultimate seo strategy in my eyes is a mixture of white hat and grey hat. A method I have talked about before is actually utilizing all 3 methods of white, grey and black.
Here is how you can do that:
- White hat / grey hat – use this for your main website
- Grey hat – use this for secondary websites
- Grey / black – use this for third tier websites, e.g YouTube videos, free blogs
Using the above you can’t really go wrong because you are using white hat on your main website with a mixture of grey hat, and then all the potentially suspect methods will be used on websites you don’t own or that are not as important.
I actually structure the methods I use depending on which business I am in.
My affiliate marketing business is big mixture of black hat and grey hat with no white hat at all. The reason for this is because I get the best methods doing this. If I went 100% white hat I would get nowhere in my niche.
For my seo business I use white hat and grey hat because these methods work best, and for a number of niche site projects I have I opt for the grey hat method because again it works best. It is all about analyzing your situation and your business and coming up with a strategy that suits you best.
